Run Your Hands Across The Petroglyphs of Tamgaly-tas

Tamgaly in Kazakh means "painted or marked place" and this this place outside Almaty kids you not by being called that. There are 2 sites: The Tamgaly Tas where petroglyphs of the Buddha can be seen amongst hunting scenes. The other site was declared an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Together, these places have more than 5000 petroglyphs concentrated mainly its main canyon. Legend has it that a Buddhist mission had stopped by the banks of the Ili River under some rock cliffs when a sudden earthquake caused rocks to fall from the cliffs around them. The missionaries survived and in gratitude they drew the Buddha images.
